The legal way to do it is have the RTA send you to the Police for a Police allocated number. This is normally done when you present it for registration or inspection for an engine number change. Also looks like crap as it's not easy to stamp on an assembl

if the numbers can be restamped easily, how would you know if the motor in your car is original or not?

its not that easy to restamp, unless you have the stamps.
also the casting date on the block should match the period of the number.

i recently had a guy try to sell me a JP block for $2000,
cheap, you would say.
but, the casting of the block was 19
Old holdens brought on the spot, quick decision, cash paid.

Then someone is in trouble. If it ended up in court then with the help of an "expert" witness you would probably be OK if you had the original as the other block would have an incorrect casting date. I got offered a standard bore 327 the other day but som

It was no con. It was how it was bought. It must have been done at some stage before the current owner. To him it was just a SBC.

does it matter which side they stamp it when the new number goes on? or does it have to stay on the same side?

It should, although Police issued numbers can go anywhere as they are a legitimate restamp.
