Talking to this bloke last night who was a mechanic for 15 yrs some years ago, he reckons for every holden v8 with a cracked head there would be at least 10 chevs, due a bit to there cooling problems which aren't helped by the water going around block before head. Also they snap oil pump drive shafts, which in a lot of cases you have to pull engine out.....true or false...?

Chevs crack heads due to flame hardened seats and also Americans not looking after them ie not changing the oil or water. Yes to replace an oil pump in a Chev you have to remove the engine.

Its pretty hard to say chevs are prone to cracking heads. There are numerous different head castings, majority of which are pretty good. Ive run chevs and been working on them for past 30 years and only had 1 set of heads crack. These were early 292 c
