hey yall, what is the thickness of car bodies, and can i weld gal to the normal car metal? thanks already bcb

I always use a gal type metal for welding in rust repairs.

2-3mm and you can weld gal to car sheet metal. Gal is just a coating Strip the gal off where you want to weld with a sander for a better weld.

as boilmaker stated, simply gring/sand/file roughly 3mm from the edge of the gal panel to avoid the gal coating contaminating the weld, also a cars metal thickness varies from chassis to panels & what car make/model you are welding the section into, it ca |

thanks men, it is for the sections i have to get bent up for around the roof opening in the campervan. it certainly isnt 3mm thick, but looks about .9>1.2mm it seems like a very soft metal, not like say zincalume,? I will get 1.2mm, maybe normal m |

I sometimes have to weld small repairs on .75mm-1.0mm with a mig on new car panels settings are coarse 1 .fine 2 or 3. wire speed 4. this is on a CIG mig 250 unit. this combo usually does the job without blowing through, takes a lot of practise and patien

hey cloudy, thanks for that, i only have a mig 150, and it is very tricky,, i tried to day to get sheetmetal workers to give me a price for the 4 pieces I need,, to no avail, so i am going to get some gal C section purlins, and manufacturer them mysel |

caution welding galv , it gives off poisonous fumes, when my father was a welder they used to make them drink milk when welding galv it must help with the poison you inhale.

yeh strip the gal back to stop it contaminating the weld. wear a mask though. its dangerous sh!t.

thanks monaro202 i am getting normal painted steel purlins, so wont be gal, but i was not aware of how dangerus it was, so in future will be more careful, dont want to carc it yet, got to win the campervan race around the mount yet!! cheers
