Guys
Been trying to sort this out.
Found a 308N the other day, and also recently heard of a 186NxxxxS.
Does this mean for example the 253's were 253NxxxxH, 253NxxxxL?

What about 161 engines? As the difference was in the head not the pistons would there have been a 161NxxxxH and 161xxxxL or just a 161N? I was talking about this a while back with Dr Terry, and am just interested if anyone has seen any engines like this? |

I have heard that the replacement engines were supplied without an engine number. It was up to the motor registry authorities or police to supply a number when the vehicle was presented for inspection. I have never seen an engine with the numbers you ment

I have a 1972 cast date 308N engine recorded, and have seen a 186NxxxxS. The 308 was obviously built in 1972

Are you sure it had an S on the end? The S should only exist for a variant away from standard eg 186S. As there was only one 308 in HT/G there would be no need for a suffix.
It may then be true that the original engines built pre HQ/LC numbering syste |
