Looking to recon the original 149 HC Red Block in my EH to take normal Unleaded. It has been suggested that I should bore it out to a 186. However this would increase the power of the engine and require the whole drive chain to be upgraded... no thanks. Instead I am looking for the 149 LC pistons. It will drop the power of the engine, but it will mean the recon will cost less - which means I can put the money saved towards respraying the old girl. A worthwhile sacrifice. Anyone know where I might find some?

Is'nt the drive train the same for a 149 EH and a 186 HK ? Same banjo diff, same gbox (crash first) etc. The EH 179M had hardened gears, but that up grade was carried out on the rest of the manuals after that.

Hi madness.
Firstly, why do you want to drop the compression of a 149. A 149 HC has a comp ratio of only 8.8 which is fine for normal unleaded. The lo comp 149 was created for the old Standard grade fuel which in the early sixties had a RON of aroun

Unfortunately my EH is January model, so it is the older drive train.
Interesting point about the 179 head though.
Thanks Webby and Dr Terry.
