Hi all Since starting my rebuild on a HZ everyone is trying to persuade me to ditch the 253 and go the 308. I havent got a problem with this. My question is, are there any major alterations to the rest of the car because as I understand it, the 308 should just slot right in. Thanks.

Roy,
Depending on what you want to do, there is nothing wrong with the 253. I've had both over the years. If you want to impress your mates and smoke the rear wheels - go the 308. If you want a good reliable V8 for crusing and good highway mileage - st

308 wil bolt straight in if it's a trimatic/4speed block. You can use a Turbo pattern block but you'll either have to change gearbox or bellhousing to suit.

The HJ 308 was 240-250 bhp depending on who`s book you read. the 253 was 185 bhp.

I'd stick with the 253, if you want to impress your mates buy some of those wissbacng chrome rocker covers with 308 on them and stick a 4bbl on it they'll never know hte difference,
if you want to change the engine wack in a 350 chev you will find the |

I would stick with the 253 unless youre going to rebuild a 308. Ive had both and the 253 revs harder and IMO is more fun to drive.
A few moths ago I took off for a cruise and forgot to turn the thermos on (long story), needless to say I almost cooked

Always wondered about the old "253's rev harder" myth. It may be true for some reason but it sounds like an urban myth to me as it goes against conventional engine physics. The further an engine goes oversquare the harder it should rev. Examples 302 Chev |

HK1837,you right its a myth depends on what u put in to how they spin,balance anything an it spins better as we all know.

Best idea is go and buy yourself a boat. Then you can weld a chain to the 253 and use it as an anchor..!!
308 is the way to go. You will pay just as much rego with a 253 with loads less grunt.
If you want to save fuel, go buy a Barina...

253s have lighter pistons (smaller bore) and therefore doesnt need huge counterweights on the crank, the rotating assembly is lighter on 2 counts and can rev faster than a 308.

You dont need to change anything on the car, except maybe a better exhaust if it only has an original type single system and possibly put a 3 row radiator in it. These are only about $350 new, and the original fan shrouds are cheap from Rare Spares for us |
