making hardware interface between ECU and PC

I cam across an interesting site that shows how you can make an electrical circuit interface between the cars computer and a PC. But since this is the first I have heard of it I just wanted to know if anyone had done this before and what was gained ie can changes be made to the ECU's settings or what? It plugs into the ALDL socket under the dash. In other words, it lets you read the fault codes (& maybe any history fault codes, depending on the softwa
