I had the same problem with my Torana. I ended up picking up a 2nd hand diff for $50, cleaning it out, replacing all the bearings and swapped some of the parts from my diff in to the new 1. All up only cost round $200. Replaced the diff myself with a mate Edited by user Wednesday, 26 November 2008 9:52:38 AM(UTC)

Sounds like worn pinion bearings to me.

Greetings, There will be a diagnosis section in the service manual with a checklist to identify the noise you mention. Many things can contribute noises in a car. The diff noise as you call it must be loud if you can hear it driving a 1 tonner.
