Hybrids are a con, try replacing the batteries when they pack up in a year or so, and then you have to get rid of the old ones, more pollution.

I dont see Hybrids as a con at all.
There has been a lot of advancement in battery technology of late.
I can see in the not too distant future fully battery powered vehicles will overtake any other form of Hybrid, bio fuel vehicle in total sales.

GM,Ford,Honda,Mits are working on engines called "HCCI"
Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition.
Its a petrol-fueled diesel engine in that they use pressure rather than spark plugs to ignite the mix of air and fuel.
