Ive removed the linkages and tried to manually push the leaver into third but it wont budge, all other gears work fine.

Any suggestions or is it time for a new box

The three speed box has two selectors. One of them does first and reverse the other does second and third.

Inside the box there is a detent system which prevents you from engaging two gears at once.They do fail. Try jiggling the firs/reverse linkage
