well, this is probably a pretty simple question to answer but everyone has a different idea. ok 351 clevo general driving round town temp sits on quarter to half. Twin thermos keep it cool, but if you take car out onto highway cruisin at 3000rpm 100km/phr temp starts to rise , doesnt get to hot but at least to close for comfort. car is straight gas, thermostat is new and 71 degrees, twin thermo el fans, 1 comes on at 90 degrees the other 100 degrees, 3 core radiator good condiion. could the water pump be the problem or blocked radiator????? What thermostat should yopu run on 351 gas v8s

I had this problem once with a 302 XC, the thermo fans were fitted the wrong way ie. suck instead of blow. Make sure when it's idling that the fans blow the air over the motor not out through the radiator core.If they're the wrong way round they work fine

Are you certain that it is overheating? Have you checked it with a infra-red thermometer or does it blow its lid? Mine is ZH 351 on Straight LPG, runs about half all the time, only creeps up in traffic and after switched off. I replaced my thermos with t

Yeah, I beleive about 90-100. I live in Perth and drive it on near 40 degree days. Never missed a beat but I am a bit concerned too. When I pull up and put the infra-red on it, Generally about 90-95 degrees. Do you have anything in front of your radiator?

Superbird - Henry Heaven; Water pump is an aftermarket alloy one, brand unknown. the only thing in front of radiator is a auto trans cooler alloy, but it doesnt really restrict air flow. Motor is 30 thou up, flat top pistons... big comp over 12;1 , car

I might go out on a limb and ask if your total ignition advance is correct? Is your centrifugal advance working? This can cause hot running at higher revs.

I have just replaced the waterpump on my Landau, and was told Dont fit an alloy pump to early Clevo'sby 4 different suppliers. Might be worth investigating.

Ok , car has just been dynoed ignition curb is ok, alloy water pump has always been on car,... Has anyone ever heard of the bottom radiator hose that has spring inside, if spring rusts the lower hose will suck flat at higher rpm therefore blocking your r

Yeah, I believe that is why the spring is in your lower hose, to stop it sucking in on itself. Never come across it but it sounds right?

I was selling these vehicles when they were new. Complaints were made about the apparent overheating. The fix was to remove the gauge and bend the needle to show a lesser reading. Try that now with consumer laws.

Yes, that used to be quite common in older Clevos. It's quite a while now since I had one and I forgot the obvious in my earlier reply, now that I think about it we used to change the hoses every year or so just for that problem.

Well looks like i may have found the problem, upon inspection of lower hose, the coil spring inside had moved right back up to water pump leaving about a 200mm gap at radiator end which could quite easily suck flat. I could flatten it with a soft squeeze.

check ebay or try superoo in WA. XA to XC coupes have the same rear glass. Glass is easier to find than the stainless trim with the trim often costing quite a few hundred dollars. Almost forgot. XA and early XB coupe will not have a rear demister an Edited by user Tuesday, 12 May 2009 6:03:38 AM(UTC)
