Hi guys, can any one help? What is the main difference between running a different ratio gear behind a 5 speed celica gear box powered by a 186? I've been told a 3.36 is better than a 3.55 and to stay away from a 3.08

A 3.36 is a good alrounder especially with a 5 speed...a 3.55 will get away from the lights a little quicker (better acceleration) a 3.08 is more of a highway cruising diff (less revs at 100 km/hr)...I know a bloke with a 3.08 in his 186 powered HR ute an

As a HR has 13 " wheels and say a later Holden has 14" wheels the ratios multip[ly across.
3.36 with 13" wheels = 3.55 with 14" 3.08 = 3.36 2.78 = 3.08
GMH combos
GTR had 13" 3.08 HK to HZ auto 3.36 LC to LX

Thanks FastEHHolden, The info is great and as you probably gathered I have been working hard trying to sort this one out. As I needed to change the whole thing I found one comp-lete and as it happened it had a 3.08 in it and I'm going to put itin and see

This is great info. Is the difference in the travelling or the taking off? And what about clutch wear is one more excessive than the other?

The smaller the number the less revs you will be doing for the same speed.
As for clutch wear, if you have a 3.55 and replace witha 2.78 it would be like converting say a 3 speed to a 2 speed with over drive. Taking off in secon each time.
