Hi crew,
I have a very original Melbourne built HT premier sedan that I am doing some work on, and am wanting to put a good stock 186s motor into it. The car compliance plates list it as first being registered in April 1970. I am trying to find a good quality engine (block + head, as I have all of the other goodies) for reconditioning, but am unsure as to what the engine numbers (well numbers after the 186S bit) or any other date coding that I might not know about should be for a late 69, early 70 melbourne built car.
Thanks heaps in advance to anyone who may be able to hep me with information on these engines, or who may have one that they want to sell.
Cheers

If its not the original engine for the car dont worry about trying to match numbers. Just use any 186S block. The number after 186S, 186P, 161H etc is simply sequential for all plants ie one sequence, started at 161H1001 (161H bit assumed, could easily ha |

Hi HK1837,
Thanks for the reply. If I understand you correctly you are saying that GMH just started their engine production runs for 186s (or other 6 cylinder engines for that matter) as 1001, and then just kept sequentially increasing the numbers, so

The best way to go is sending your chassis number or the VIN number to get the number as close as possible. I take it the original engine is no longer in the car? If so then how do you know it should be a 186S and not a 186? 186S is also rare in HT as the

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0 |

Wow,
I never thought I would learn so much about GMH engine numbering! The original engine is in the car and is a 186P engine. I have had the car for 10 years and have no intention of ever selling it. The reason I am being so particular is that I hate

Just rebuild the original 186P block and use 186S external bits. 186S and 186P blocks are identical bar the engine number prefix. If you want more power use a 202. A 186K block is as alien to a HT as a 202 block would be.

Hi htprem, your 186K block could either be a X2 Block or a 186s depending on number sequence. Numbers up to 186K162700 are X2 and from 186K162701 would make it 186s. Could be worth good dollars to the right buyer if in good condition.

Hi tripple webers,
I already sold off the 186K engine to a guy who was doing up an HR. He seemed pretty happy to find the right engine for his car. From memory he was pretty sure it was HR 186 s numbers.
Thanks for the advice.

I would go by the block casting date if it were me . As at least you will then truly know when it was built if it means a lot to you . Hope this helps www.monaromuscleparts.comEdited by user Friday, 3 April 2009 5:39:43 AM(UTC)

Hi monaro muscle parts,
Yep I think you are right. I checked the block code on the 186P engine in the car on the weekend, and it reads D160. From what I have learnt in the last week that would date it 16th April 1970. I think I will hang out for a late
