i have a 76 HX with a standard 173 and wondering what to do to it first. it already had extractors when i bought it, and maxes out at about 130km/h. im looking to get this a bit higher or even just more torque. any suggestions?

are you just after high speed or do you want more power all round?

what is your diff ratio?

do you have a points dizzy or electronic HEI? if you have points i would recomend changing to HEI

if your really serious about spark then also get a set of brisk plugs

do you have a standard carby? if so maybe upgrade to a 34 adm weber (xf carby)

if its a low comp, its nothing a 4/71 wont fix lol.

seriously though, take whatever money you plan on spending and just v8 it, sell the 173 to some anal torana guy (sorry restorers, im only kidding)

if you cant have the v8 for bullsh1it transport reg reasons, do yourself a favour and bung a 202 in, use whatever good gear you have already on the 173, and FEEL THE POWER BABY!

I would look at trading it in on a 1968 Corolla like this one.

It does look a bit gay but with its 1.1L 60hp engine and 4 spd gearbox it will gauranteed run rings around a big ole kingswood packed with a 173.

Good luck.

haha yeah i know, but my mate has a HR with a 202 in it that does 94 mph or so, so i need to top that or at least give him a run for his money. and im only on red Ps so cant get a V8 for a few years, otherwise id already have dropped something with an extra 2 cylinders in haha.

The Corolla is in great nick. Toyota made a good reliable car there.

BronsonHX, Id go the 202, but if you intend to keep the 173, why not fit a 186S twin throat carby and inlet manifold?

Google! This is probably the most common question in all of Holdens history. How to improve a Red6.

If youre not up to opening the motor, go HEI igniton, which is almost a total bolt in job, just one tricky wire to find. Youve got the extractors already, which is nice.

Give it a decent tune up, ie set the timing, gap the plugs, change the air and fuel filters, get the auto serviced if its a trimatic, check for vacuum leaks. These are cheap and simple ways to improve performance but to increase your top speed you need to increase HP or reduce weight, start with the rear venetians and the front visor. ;)

The HX motor would be no good to the "anal" Torana guys because it wont have the correct engine number prefix, even if the date code was an exact match.

haha yeah ive done away with most of the old man style things, although it does look good with the set of whitewalls i put on. i was thinking maybe a bigger carby and new camshaft. i think the bloke who i bought it from took the 173 out of an LJ torana, as it originally had a 186

I thought the 173 was a bit old for the HX, it should have been a 179 or 202.

Your best bang for buck will be to go and find a good working red 202. You already have extractors, so just add a HEI dizzy and a 186S inlet manifold and 253 WW Stromberg or Falcon 2 barrel Weber. If you want to spend a few more bucks a mild cam also, but plenty of secondhand 202s are around with work done.
