it wont crank the engine over yet tests fine on the bench using the same battery and jumper leads extending the wiring (70 sq. mm flex)

battery is fully charged.

its a cae high torque deal 3.5hp and its been fine for 4yrs.

Its not just a matter of replacing it, i would like to know why and what is causing it before parting with another $350.

Can an auto elec load test it?

Maybe some of the windings have shorted, but there is still enough there to spin it under no load? Its not producing the torque right? Its not something like the solenoid not engaging?

Bad earth to engine block?
Try running one of your jumper leads fron the batt- to the alternator bracket or similar.

Indeed. Starters are the biggest load on a battery. Ive had it a few times where the decent reading on the multi-meter doesnt translate to full cranking juice. Glad you got it sorted for no expense.
