to fit a holden v8 into a hg i know i need the correct sump and pickup, do i need ht/g engine mounts and brackets or will hq-z type fit? also has anyone used the v6 conversions power steer rack conversion? does this still require a ht/g sump?

i know the rubber mounts are different, HQ-WB run A1156(i remember that part number, i sold literally 1000s of them)and i think from memory HT-HG with holden V8 ran A1135 in a macaky part nuber thay is. Im not too sure bout the perches on the X member, but i used to sell PEMP307(weld on eng mount adaptors for CHEV V8)from pacemaker when i sold pipes for many years, bit im not sure if these are ok for a plastic into these cars, someone here will know exactly what you have to do put a front mounted rack, then you can run a std HQ type pan, or even better still a high volume pan if you desire

Ill check in the shed today, but im pretty sure although HT/G mounts are very different to HQ-WB, the net effect of the mount and its adapter places the engine in the same place.

i thought the HT HG mount was overall about 7mm deeper sitting the engine higher.

Just checked. The HQ-WB and HT-HG adapters are basically identical, except the HT-HG has "wings"on the side that the engine mount bolts to, where the HQ-WB has studs out the back of the mount and holes in the adapter for them to go through. Basically you could convert HT-HG adapters into HQ-WB by drilling 2 x holes in each adapter. Unfortunately I dont have a HQ-WB mount here to compare to the dozen or so HT/G I have. However from memory when you put them side by side the long slots on the mount that the big bolt goes through end up in the identical spot. Not sure why the running change though from HG to HQ. Must be a reason.

If it has HQ-WB mounts on it try those first. Do some measuring too with the rack, you might be able to get away with a HQ-WB sump with a rear mounted rack.

Id be interested to know the answer.
Last week I helped a fellow Fastlane member remove the 308 from his HG.
This fellows car has the cross member neatly notched to clear the oil pump and his fan is too low and too far away from his radiator for him to fit a shroud.
The car has the HQ-WB mount setup.
After reading about V8s into Toranas the consensus on GMH-Torana.com is that if you use HQ-WB mount brackets on a Torana the engine will sit lower and further back than if you use Torana brackets.
So it would appear that the same goes for the HK-HG if you use HQ-WB mounting hardware but as I say I would be interested to know for sure.

not sure bout the HQ stuff in torana jim, i have a 1 owner LX SLR 5000 that im doing for a guy now, ill dig the metal mounts that bolt to the block and meausure them, i reckon the torana ones are slighter different in hieght, i cant remember if taller or lower but i reckon there is a difference, but then again i could be wrong. i am also positive that HT-G with holden V8 must run there own mounts coz as i posted before the rubbers are different, but im just not sure of the perches on the front end. i have a HG 308 Xmember outside, i will post a pic tomorrow then we can compare. You are right the Torana ones are a different height to a HQ-WB bracket and would look the same in isolation to the untrained eye (mine included) but are clearly different when they are placed together.
Yep the HK-HG do run different rubbers to all of the other V8s so it stands to reason that the brackets are different too. As far as I know the Torana, Commodore & HQ-WB all use the same rubbers as each other but three distinctly different rubber to block bracket sets.

Team Heres a pick of my mounts that Jims mentioned. Byron suggested theyre HQ mounts. I am having problems with height of the shroud (HQ) and fan (square blade commodore). I went to Rare Spares locally and checked their HG shroud and it has not got enough difference to make the fan work. But I do remember the HG fan blades were rounded off. Maybe that with the different HG mounts might make the fan/shroud work. If only I could scam a HG fan to test my theory without paying for it.... If you ask nicely I might find a photo of Jim5.0 to post.... Cheers Jeremy The G will roll again.... Edited by user Tuesday, 2 February 2010 6:52:55 AM(UTC)

If there is a difference it must be in the rubber mount. The steel adapter is the same physical dimensions, just the way the mount attaches to it is different. If I had a HQ rubber mount I could put it and its adapter side by side with a HT/G adapter and rubber mount. I do remember doing it once though (with new rubbers) and with the steel bits side by side on a flat surface and the block bolt holes aligned you could stick a piece of 12-13mm bar right through the slots on both rubber mounts, hence the combination of adapter and rubber mount together should leave the motor sitting in the same place. So in the above photo, if you pulled the HQ-WB mount and adpater out and replaced it with a HT/G adapter and mount the block would remain where it is. Ill see if I can dig up a HQ mount and take photos... I think the last ones went with some SBC into HQ adapters I had.

Im sure hes correct too Jeremy, Ive fitted many HQ style mounts & brackets to HK/T/HG with no dramas, but one question still remains. As you know I have your front suspension assembly in my shop at the moment & I cannot understand the reason for the cut-out Jim was referring to. If it is to clear the oil pump, it may (at one time) have had a larger aftermarket hi-volume style pump fitted. I checked my own HG 253 Premier & it has plenty of clearance with no need for that cut-out. Dr Terry _______________________________________ There are only 3 types of people in the world. 1. HQ-WB? oil pumps are a bit different to VN onwards, especially the location of the hole for the sensor/switch. Maybe this is why? Ill look at some in the shed tomorrow and see how they differ.

Well thats a good thing then. Besides moderators might remove it for being offensive 8-) Thats also a good point about maybe the oil pump being EFI 5.0 and not 253/308

Have a close look at JPB's photo's above. What you are looking at is a 308 fitted with VN top end and injection. |
