seems like a genuine number, i think GM call them "crankstops" from memory. so i just called and quizzed a friend that builds 308s and he said that they used to get them from GM and then drill the blocks to suit at the workshops. beats me though really, someone here will know more i reckon

They are the main caps from a Walkinshaw (VL SS Group A) motor.
Does the engine number start with VP5 ???

All walky motors were numbered VPxxxxxx. Holden were up to about 575000-582000 by that stage, so a Walky block would be a number like VP57xxxx or VP58xxxx
Is the engine number original or re-stamped? Could well be an original walky block with the pad decked & re-stamped - wouldnt be the first.
Or, they caps could have been purchased from GMH, and then fitted to any 308 or 304 (or 253 if you want!) block, by machining the steps in the blocks cap face out wider, as well as having the additional drilling & tapping done.
