Hi all , A friend asked me about replacing a 186s opel with a 1st type 327 with saginaw & salisbury in a HK monaro. Hes got the motor gearbox and diff, but I'm not sure if it's the correct gearbox, I thought the mountings would probably be different, , but I could'nt think what else though. How about the clutch, whats the difference on pedal setup, pushrod length, overcentre spring, etc under the dash or the return spring on the slave cylinder. Whats the difference, or are they all the same? . Are there any other snags you would come across or be careful of ? ...all the best ...regards Jack.

186S Opel will have a mechanical clutch setup and a different crossmember, and the Saginaw selector linkages will foul on the transmission tunnel, and there will be no hole for the speedo cable in the firewall. The best advice I could give you to give him if the engine, box and diff are original type 1 HK is to sell the whole lot. Then buy a 350 crate motor, new Muncie and 9" for the HK. What he gets for the original stuff will probably cover it.

Thanks HK1837, sounds like a simple option but Im pretty sure he likes the idea of a 327 in the hk with all the correct bits. I think a lump hammer might help make some clearance for the linkages and we could probably play around with a powerglide crossmember .What sort of dramas with the clutch, you would have to be careful with the pushrod length and the pedal itself or are they all the same...Jack

A few other things to think about might be the engine mount adapters, sump for HKTG, chev / sag bellhousing for the 11" clutch, LH clutch fork & spring (aussie units) for the HKTG slave cyl, need conversion to hydraulic clutch with pushrod thru floor to clutch pedal, bigger tailshaft etc. Need a sag crossmember with shifter and floorpan linkage clearance is a biggie.

I would have some of the stuff you would need for a conversion.
Remembering i am not the cheapest bloke in town thats for sure ! Here is a quote i did for someone a while ago for a person wanting to do a similar thing , and here is what is needed .

Spigot bush for rear of engine
Saginaw Gearbox (2.54 single notch input shaft )
Flywheel
Clutch assembly
Slave cylinder
Clutch fork & Return spring ,
Slave Cyl Pushrod,
Clutch master cylinder ,
Clutch pipe ,
2 x brass fitting adaptors ,
Proper hydraulic clutch pedal set up ,
Reverse light switch and wiring loom ,
Speedo cable and adaptor ,
Speedo driven gear ,
Correct bell housing and bolts ,
Clutch pivot ball
Side selectors for linkages ,
Linkage set up and clips with shifter brace ,
Shifter ,
Crossmember ,
Chrome shifter arm (you can use your shift ball )
Console or at least console insert for 4 speed (they do have a hump on the left side of the console also which your may have already .
Tailshaft
U bolts and nuts
Diff assembly complete .

If he wants to use the correct bits, theres a photo below of a correct 327 gearbox. A couple of notes ......
The shifter is attached to the rear mount
The rear extension does not have 3 shifter mounting holes
The Release Fork can just be seen on the RHS of the Bellhousing
The chrome bolt at top left is where the Slave Cylinder assy bolts on
You can see that the Shift Rods stick out a bit, hence the need for a bit of work on the floor pan.
Ignore the tape measure, I was doing some comparisons between a Saginaw and a Supra

Ill add one thing : flywheel, Clutch and starter motor, make sure if you go 11 inch they are all for 11 inch as there is 10.5 inch as well

I used 10.5 as that was the starter i had already had so got flywheel and clutch to suit.

11 inch flywheel 168 teeth
10.5 inch flywheel 153 teeth

regards

Paul

Jack,

The crossmember can be powerglide, with the V8 step down and spacers. If you have a saginaw crossmember you can manufacture the shifter holder easily and then weld in the appropriate place. Your handbrake also needs adjusting, see on the saginaw unit.

When you have the engine out just drill the whole for the speedo cable, once again just take the dimension of a V8 car, or the cable is long enough to be routed through the 6 cylinder hole.

The clutch pedal is not that hard, just grab one from a 6 cylinder crash box HK (yes I know not that easy these days)

Wiring harness for engne will be adjusted, extend reverse and temp wires, shorten oil and ignition, re route stater. Once agian if you have one there it is easy to modify 6 cylinder one.

From memory the alternator wire is long enough, but will need the litle cover on the back of the alternator.

The console base on an opel is different to powerglide and saginaw, the one you want will require the lump on the side.

The last thing is the accellerator cross shaft.

Once you have these, and the lump hammer, it is about a 6 hour job, then get exhaust fitted and away you go.

The extra weight will lower the front by about 1", so give some consideration to changing the front springs.

You will also need to pull the tacho out and change the switch from 6 to 8.

Thanks fellas, all that would be very helpful, I think I might just get him to read all this for himself and if he thinks he can handle all that hell be well on his way, but it would be a good idea to gather the parts 1st. Im sure there will more than a few questions like; but it wont fit or how can you do that....all the best regards...Jack
