Hey all,
Lately when starting my car (vr) it makes a metally grinding noise. A friend had a look at it and said it sounded like it was coming from the starter motor. Any ideas what is wrong with it? It makes this sound every time its started.

yeah it's pretty loud. It stops once the car is starter. It makes the noise only when it is being started.

I hope its not for your sake but may be the ring gear on the flywheel worn out, the starter motor gears not engauging properelly and grinding

id pull out the starter motor and check both gear flywheel and starter motors gears for wear

If you have a Delco starter motor on it the front bearing dies in the starter motor and you ar in for an $800ish bill for the starter motor alone if your ring gear is still OK.

If you have a Bosch starter motor their prices are a lot more reasonable.

Vandals and graffiti "artists" do everyone a favour and target parking meters and fixed speed cameras only.

Don't scare her. It's a VR. There is no rational reason on earth to pay $800 for any single part on that car. Any more than $50 for a used starter motor and you're getting ripped hard.
