I have been looking into the old strombergs and would like to comprehend them better, like the X2 setup and what to do and not to do what is and is not.
Now basically we have red motors with BXUV-2 from all motors up to 161 and BXV-2 from 173 up to 202.
Now i take it as B = single downdraft.
X = cross flange as in the main body venturi.
U = 1/8 under size throttle body.
O = 1/8 over size throttle body.
And the number 2 = 1 7/16 throttle valve size??
Now the HQ 173 & 202 has a flange size of 1.44
The 173 has a main venturi of 1.156 and
The 202 has a main venturi of 1.218
The 130 has a main venturi of 1.094
What do the other 149 & 161 venturi have and what does the X2 venturi have i think they are all 1.094 ??
Now when we are on about the X2 i believe they came with
1.094 venturi and a 1.31 throttle body sizes is 161 and 149?
Now when some one wants to put twin strombergs on there motor they have to get this all sorted out right.
Original X2 have X2M stamped on the carbs.
Now i believe for a twin strom setup the best bet is to look for 161 & 149 carbys or would a 173 to 202 be OK????????

When using triple strombergs i thing you use BXOV-1 from the grey motors??
What have people found is the right way to go about with these setups. and what not to do.

X2 sedans came out with a 1.50 small tail exhaust pipe? and the others got a 1.75 tail pipe or is that wrong.

The X2 manual had a vacuum control above the throttle body and the auto vacuum control is below the throttle body. for the dizzy.

I think those dimensions are for the engine pipe, not the tail pipe.

This is the same for all Holden carbies (6 & V8) up to 1976.

I'm not so sure about :- "O = 1/8 over size throttle body." as the old Grey Motor carby is a BXOV-1.

Both X2s (HD 179 & HR 186) use 2 149/161 carbies.

The main venturi sizes are as follows:-

FX-EJ Grey -1 1/32-inch
138, 148, 161 - 1 3/32-inch
173, 179,186 - 1 5/32-inch
202 1 7/32-inch

There are 3 different flange bolt patterns with 5 different bore sizes. BTW the later (larger) flange bolt pattern was introduced in mid 1973 for the ADR27 carbies.

IMHO the twin & triple Bendix Stromberg set-ups are not that good compared to a good 2-barrel. The problem is even if you get the main jetting correct, multiple power valves supply too much fuel & don't open at the same time.

I have engine pipe at 1.875 for X2.
And only 215A, 225A, 235A. have 1.50 tail pipe.
I have HQ service manual saying 173 & 202 having flange at 1 1/4 = 1.44 ??
And 173 main venturi 1.156
And 202 main venturi 1.218
HX 202 is bigger ??

I concur with Dr Terry on the X2 setup. Knowing this because we've talked about mine ;-)

I have larger 1 5/32 twins on a genuine X2 manifold. Even with the manifold ported to suit and the main jets altered it's very rich down low. This is on a fairly strong 202 by the way.

The only way around it is time consuming alteration of the valves by playing with spring weights and jet sizes. Even then though it's never quite 100%.

By all accounts factory setups with their small 149 carbs never really had such a problem, but big cams/low vacuum excacerbates the underlying difficulty with running two BXV Strombergs.
