just wanted to get some pros and cons on lowering blocks guys as opposed to re-setting the springs with an extra leaf which is much more expensive .

i used lowering blocks in my old van. it gave my a cheap idea how it would look and test for tyre scrubbing as i had really wide rims and tyres on it. i notice movement in the rear end with the cheap u-bolts that come with the blocks. in the end i went to a truck suspension place and got you bolts made. $15 each. never moved after that. when i got the springs reset i gave the blocksand u-bolts to a mate. about 8 years later. he still driving around with that set up and says nothing ever went wrong.

IN some states they are illegal,but I like them and have used them without dramas.

Lowering blocks:
Cheap.
Easy.
Accurate.
Doesn't change the pinion angle of the diff.
Keeps the elliptical design of the leaf spring.
By increasing distance of axle to spring dimension, therefore increase the leverage, can increase the chance of spring wind up & axle hop.

Resetting leaf springs:
Dearer
Can be accurate
Does change the diff pinion angle that can lead to vibration.
Reduces the chance of spring wind up & axle hop.
Tends to flatten the spring & remove the elliptical shape. Spring then tends not to operate as well.

I have not used blocks for my EH with 327, have used reset & stiffer springs.
I have used blocks, 50mm, in my HR with stock driveline.

Lowering partially by leaf is good, but if you go too far in the elliptical leaf, they become flatter, and the design does not work as well as a spring.

Lowering partially by block is good, but if you go too far, you increase the chance of spring wind up if you tramp it, resulting in axle hop.

Most cars lower well by 2 inches with an extra leaf added. Any fine tuning up to an inch more can then be done by block. Lowering blocks are not illegal. If you check the ADR's, there are certain requirements they must meet, and one of them is that the blocks must be made of solid metal. I would not think wooden ones will pass.

Peter ,I'm pretty sure they are illegal in S.A.I know tramp rods are,and the explanation I was given by the RTA over here was your not able to ALTER the rear geometry with them.I could have missunderstood but thats what they said.I personally dont see why they would be illegal thou?
