Hi hkute68,
I recall the diff centres are painted on the inside from the OEM supplier so as to lower the warranty rate on diff bearing noise.
If not coated, the 'as cast' surfaces and freshly machined surfaces release into the oil fine iron dust and graphite, this is because the centres are cast iron.
Normally the ring and pinion are OK with fine iron dust but the bearings hate it!
Hope this answers the Q.

Hi, not sure about HK's but I can tell you that my Torana had a colour splotch on the rear which matches the body colour, this splotch is also on the gearbox.
Many Holden had a charcoal coloured firewalls but you can have some very heated aguments about this, and before ou ask no they don't all fade to charcoal in an perfectly even manner.
It might be possible that diffs are painted the same colour as the underbodies and many had charcoal under bodies, not black! black is the colour that colour blind painers or ones that don't care paint their firewalls and underbodies. An exception to the charcoal coloured firewall is the XU-1 which had the gey charcoal colour overpainted black from new, but the boots were still charcoal!
