At the recent Monaro Nationals in Warwick there were 2 Chevrolet SSs on display, one red and the other powder blue. The red one (which was a 350 and won Export Class) had HK 327 flag badges fitted to the front guards. The Blue one had fender badges as per the follwoing photos:

Notice the spelling of Litre. I did not catch up with the owner and as Warren Turnbull was only allowing me one question without notice every 10 minutes, I did not get an explanation for the badging. I assume the 'Litre' would have been an original for this car and the 'Liter' a replacement from a US sold vehicle but what? Anyone know?

One European spelling, one US spelling. South Africa has two languages, and made by GM South Africa which is a US company. I think it deliberate.

I did point this out to someone, must have been between questions without notice.

Sorry about that rule, but was very busy. Would loved to have been able to just sit and talk to everyone, or like what I did at Wang in 1998.

According to the Sth African sales brochures of the time, LITRE is the correct spelling as it is in Australia.

The LITER badge must be a yankee impostor.

The correct spelling is LITRE for these badges...

I wonder where the LITER one came from? I saw a Chev SS (said to be original 350, but IMO it was original 308) a few months ago that had one of these kind of badges that said "350" instead of 5 LITRE.

I spoke to the owner who told me they had basically modified/manufactured the badge using an old 5 LITRE one. The factory 350 SS originally had the 350 decal, not the badge.

Cheers

The plot thickens... Check this South African ad out, guy spells it "Liter".

http://www.junkmail.co.z...QYAdQXF17911QYEdQX201032

I have a sneaky feeling that if it is a bilingual thing it would stand to reason that one side is "Liter" and the other "Litre".

I have asked the person who placed the ad if he would let me know.

This might help...

http://translate.google.com/#en|af|litre%0D%0A

Just switch it around to English to Afrikaans and type in litre, translation is liter.

South Africans "Yarpies" spell Mum the yank way, ie Mom. Therefore it stands to reason that like the rest of the world, they too have been Americanised

Interesting... I know of an SS that is genuine 60000km original, and it has LITRE badges... and my old SS308, which was also very original, had LITRE badges as well...

maybe some later (or earlier) models used the LITER spelling? Or maybe they were from another car entirely? Something 307 Chev powered?

I'm still leaning towards LITRE as the correct badge for the SS though...

Cheers

I'm certain that LITRE is the correct spelling from the factory, this is how all of the English language versions of the Sth African sales brochures show it anyway. The Afrikaans language version does show LITER in the text but all of the badging (on the cars) is still in English. I don't know of any badging on SA Holdens or SA Chev/Holdens that is in Afrikaans.

My guess is that an aftermarket supplier has remade some badges for the resto market & has mis-spelt it.

Dr Terry

I have a feeling that badge may have been used in Canada on Arcadians and Beaumonts as it looks familiar but i may be wrong there .

I emailed this thread to a mob in Canada called "Early Birds".

Their reply...

Thanks for writing.

Sorry we have not seen these emblems before.

Your GM Muscle Car Parts Headquarters.

So perhaps that would exclude North America.
Dr T has the knowledge, he say's they were "Litre" only.
My South African contact say's the "Liter" badge has the part number "GEBA No 1362" on the back of it and it is "a poor job". GEBA seems to have disappeared as far as South Africa goes. There is a German company called GEBA who make water pumps etc for BMW, Merc & Audi etc, but they started in 1986.

Still none the wiser as to the origins of the "Litre" badge, Dr T might know if any SA content went into the Chev SS or whether the whole box and dice was made here.

I have a very original low km Chev SS 308 Manual. Both of the front fender badges are "5 LITRE". General Motors SA would not have applied mismatching front fender badges.

I sent a SethOfrican colleague of mine an email asking how they spell litre as I could not find him to ask him personally. a couple of days later I asked one of his staff where he is, the reason I have not received an answer yet.... He's in Zansibar <SP?> So I'll have to wait until he gets near an internet for the answer.

The Seth Efricorns may have done this so that the LITRE goes on the right side and the LITER goes on the other right side to prevent confusion for the workers.

The plot is getting thicker...

Everyone who should know, ie, South African owners of these cars and Dr T have said the cars came out with "Litre" badges, same on both front guards.

The "Liter" badge appears to be a repro which uses Afrikaans spelling.

Would be good though to know what the part number on the "Litre" badge is.
