changed the fan belt a few days ago koz the GEN lite stays on once the car is going and dims slightly above 70 kmh ! I thought the new belt with the correct tension would solve the problem and it didnt . I dont have an ohms meter but the battery never goes flat , the engine doesnt cut out , and there seems to be no loose conections in the wiring . It does hav the bosch non adjustable separate regulator which could be the problem and also the headlights dont dim when the motor is revved as well .

It can be a number of things, but in general the field winding is not making enough magnetic field.
This could be because of:
1) Regulator 2) Brush contact pressure (still there as light does not come on at all if open circuited) 3) High resistance joint, on contact, slip ring to winding. 4) Field winding partial short to earth
It will keep running, as the car will run without alternator for a long time, and when light is out will quickly recharge, as long as you do not have a huge sterioe and driving lights on etc.
A new or recoed alternator should fix it.
