just wondering what shifter would you reckomend 4 253 hz 3 speed auto

"Pro drag 19"..mark 2.. manual lock out",NA..Just kidding..lol...the standard t-bar is fine as Dr Terry has said or you could use the lesser seen one called the pistol grip,seen some of these in toranas.

i want to put in on the floor as its colum at the moment but not sure whether to leave it and try and find a bench seat for it

You can use a standard style T-bar with a bench, but you have to leave the bench fully slid backwards. The best shifter for this is a UC Torana as you can use it without a console, however your HZ probably shifts on the right, and UC are on the left so you'd have to modify the UC shifter to RH shift. All you need to cover it is a custome vinyl boot. The UC shifter wiring harness just goes under the carpet and plugs straight into the HZ's harness.
