Bare with me as I don't have my books here with me so I will be using laymans terms instead of technical terms.

Ok so I'm taking off everything from the firewall in preparation for removing all the rust and painting the engine bay black.

I'm up to taking off the brake system from the firewall and I've come up to a bit of a problem. Is there a way to remove the nuts that secure the system to the firewall without haveing to take out things like the steering column?

The two nuts on the left side are above the steering column and with all the brackets and things in there its impossible to get my tools in there.



Also, when I was taking out the split-pin from the pin that attaches the brake pedal to the centre shaft of the brake system something came flying off which i haven't been able to find, I'm thinking a spring washer? This is what I've got:



There's the pin, a regular washer and a split pin, not sure what went missing.

regarding booster, it can be done, but its a bastard of a job.

i just use an open end spanner and heaps of swear words, but a richer man might be able to fit a ratcheting spanner in there.

Thanks for the info fellas, looks like I'll try dropping the column and see if that helps.. otherwise I'll be pulling the column out to do it(more work than I woulda liked). Good to know what it was that went ping then missing haha... thanks Nz, also keep up the posts on your thread, helps to motivate me to get stuff done on mine : )

shouldnt have to bother with pulling the column, just do it the hard way and make sure the kiddies are wearing earmuffs.

you might even be able to get the nuts off with a 1/4" socket set with long extension and a uni.

pretty sure the bit you lost is just a flat washer, and the pedal return spring.

If i can be bothered fighting my way into the shed and contorting under the dash, ill try and grab a pic for you.

Attempted it again before I started taking bits out to get at it, managed to fit a socket knuckle in where I didn't think I would be able, put on a long extention and it was actually quite easy once I got that in.
Rest came off with no trouble, mind you the two washers on the top two bolts disappeared behind the insulation. Not to worry though because I have the bottom two washers for reference if I need to replace them.

Also took off the accelerator linkage and the wiper motor with not too much dramas. Took a little while to get the clip off the wiper linkage, had to work out that it was a slide clip first haha.

Supercheap is a great place for buying extension shafts. They are cheap, little can go wrong with them, and if you are going to continue building/renovating cars, then buy a selection of lengths.
Universal joint sockets are worth their weight in gold....but buy good quality ones.
The cheaper ones are too floppy and wobble all over the place.
Those wiper slide clips are a pain....I usually end up destroying them when trying to remove them..

In thrust we trust

You can get an adaptor that allows the socket to move to any angle. They are miles better than a uni joint adaptor. Plus you can push the socket on all the way and use it as an extra short extension.
