Run a separate gauge as well if you can,its very important to get a "correct"reading.

Nathan,

You'll have to specify if you want a magnetic or thermal type fuel gauge. I think it was about September 1973 when they went from magnetic to thermal gauges, and different senders.

Hi Nathan,

You can test the resistance of the fuel tank sender if you have a multimeter and know the approximate level of the tank, however if you don't have a multimeter the next best way is to test the gauge, providing it is in working condition, see below.

Remove the fuel sender wire from the back of the gauge. Make sure the 12V is still connected along with the earth strap and turn your key to ON. If the needle starts going across to full, you have a magnetic gauge, turn the key straight off to avoid damage. If it stays on empty, you have a thermal. This procedure will only work if your fuel gauge is in working condition.

I'll give it a shot this weekend... the fuel gauge works its only the oil that doesn't
