Does anyone roughly know what year the following 308H engine would be without seeing the date code?

It should be 1969. That number sequence started at 308H1001 or 253H1001 or 253L1001 at HT release, so after approx 21,000 non-307 V8 HT's were made, which should put it later in 1969.

That is the cast date, not when it was used in a car. The engine number gives you a much better idea of when it was used in a car.

Have we got a database for engine numbers for red motors with approx date like we do have with all the grey motors.

Did the HT & HG holden V8 motors engine number go up to say 253H37000 then when the HQ came out did it start QR37001 or QR1001 with the HQ.

I think from the HQ all numbers are in sequence regardless of 6 cyl or v8 or torana ect.

But in the first holdan v8's the hurricane got engine number 253H1001 and 253H1002 then the first HT V8 would be from 253H1003 and the next could be 308H1004.
Is this right.

Did the first 149 EH 6 CYL start with H1001 then could a 179 be a M1002 and from there on all the way to the end of the HG that 6 CYL sequence stops.
Is there a G.M.Holden Engine Production & Numbers from EH on database.

I don't known of any Red motor 6-cyl database similar to the Grey motor one. The Grey motor one probably originated from within GM-H itself & would've been easy to document, because there was only one style of motor in production at the time.

The engine number sequence began at 1001 from the start of HQ production.

I do not know the Hurricane's original engine number, but it would not have been with the normal sequence & given that it was a 4-barrel 253, with a solid lifter camshaft & 10:1 compression would not be considered a 253H spec motor. From what I've learned of the numbering system, the reason they begin at 1001 is that prototypes & pre-production test motors fall within the first 1000 engines.

EH engines got their own numbering sequence but given that engines are produced in batches, it's more than likely that the first few 100 engines were 149s from say H1001 to H1200 & then they made 100 or so 179s from M1201 to M1300 for example.

The numbers began again at say 149D1001 or 179F1001 for HD & ran through HR (161R & 186A etc.) & then reset to 1001 again for HK (161H or 186P etc.)
