Hi All

My brother in law recently picked up a VN SS for his toy.

Apparently all in good condition, however, he is experiencing a problem and is looking for some guidance.

The problem is that when he is sitting around 80kmh and he puts his foot down (even if slightly), the car kicks back and he is hearing a loud knock and then some shuddering.

With my limited knowledge i'd guess that it has to be the gearbox and something to do with the kickdown or the top gear. My rationale for this is that if it were the engine, it would happen all through the gears but this is not happening?

Anyone got some ideas?

Also, anyone know someone around welshpool way (WA) that could have a look for him - he is in redcliffe.

I presume its an auto (rare for an SS), has he checked things like engine and gearbox mounts. The centre uni could also be stuffed and can make the car shudder.

You could also try the Street Commodores forum.

I'd check the following in this order:
- Transmission mount
- Engine mounts
- Torque convertor lockup clutch (more common on VS though) - the lockup point is around 70-80km/h, and when they wear, they shudder when they kick in & out if you apply load.
- Tailshaft centre bearing mount
- Tailshaft CV joint (I've just killed 2 of them, and they shudder under acceleration whilst already travelling at speed - eg when you go to overtake at 70, 80, 90km/h etc).

Hi Mark,

If your brother in law ends up replacing the tailshaft CV joint, make sure he gets an OEM or good quality aftermarket replacement.

I had a VS ute which had a very minor shudder under acceleration with the original CV joint. I replaced it with a new aftermarket cv (can't remember the brand but it was around $130) and it made the shudder worse, so I ended up putting the original one back in until I could get my hands on a new genuine part which fixed the problem completely.

There were plenty made with auto boxes I was working at Holdens when they were made, manuals are harder to find.

Have had the same fault and ended up being the lock up clutch in the torque convertor.
