i've had a idea!, i want to have a play with turbo charging
i have a HQ tonner with a 186 in it, i want to turbo charge it just for fun, the point is to see how cheap i can do it and to see what sort of difference it makes
the point isn't to make big power but to have a bit of fun, try something different and learn something, any power gain will be a bonus
any idea's how to do this cheaply?
where can you buy a turbo exhaust manifold from? i did consider cutting up a set of extractors and fabricating something but if there's a easier way i'd love to know
intake wise, i'm thinking of using a straight gas set-up with a gas carby mounted on a VK EFI manifold (i'll have to change the head to suit) this seams simple enough
does this sound like it could work?
i have read about the CRT strata kits they sound good but i think finding 1 these days would be difficult
any tips i should know?

hell yeah that's cool!!!
but it's a little more wild than i'm after, i want to drive my ute to work everyday, it's more about learning about turbo's and seeing if i can make something work, rather than making huge power
i know you can buy bolt on kits for the red 6 but there about $5000, i want to see how cheap i can make 1 out of bits, should be fun, at the very least i'll learn something

You could try running 202 pistons and 161 head to drop compression too.

well, i reckon a stock t3 from a VL would work ok for a red 6, theres enough airflow potential to give you a fright and they can be had really cheap. straight lpg works real well with FI, apparently the gas research carbs work really well for blow thru. here is a pic i grabbed from the net when researching my plans for a turbo 6 for my EH, it looks pretty "simple" to knock up and should fit nicely in a full size engine bay. this pic was from a commodore (i think)but it gives an idea of how to make the hotside pipework on the cheap.
11.38@117mph will go quicker 11.34@121mph went quicker and faster, just not quick enough. now being rebuilt with less cam, much less comp, and a turbo. Edited by user Tuesday, 21 December 2010 9:52:41 PM(UTC)

simplest setup is to run straight gas
use an impco 425 4 barrel on an aftermarket manifold, model E converter, flex lpg lines and a vff30 lock off and will be good for 200rwkw
you get your 1500 bucks back from the governemt too so the gas setup will only cost you about 1000 bucks if buying all new etc
a t3 would be enough, maybe a hiflow t3, we have used a few of the monster t3/t4's from ebay succesfully, they are cheap at around 300 last time i looked, they only need the wastegate port bored out larger
recurved dizzy
use a J pipe on the exhaust, i dont know if this is possible as i dont play with holdens but with ford 6's you just make a j shaped pipe mount to the standard exhaust flange, or cut up the exhaust and make a log manifold
with basic skills these can be made for $20 etc

i just re read, if your going a efi style manifold you can get away with using a impco 225 as the mixer and use the factory throttle body, just make sure you find a metal lid impco 225
|

thanks for the tips, my mate is a gas fitter so the intake side (straight gas) is sorted, so far it's the exhaust side that's got me stumped
greenhj, that pic helps, i need to do this on a strict (low) budget or it won't happen, so i need to do most things myself, fabrication and castings is what i do best so i have a advantage there, i've got so many ideas ATM, just gunna have to think about it for a while, i've got too many other projects on the go right now so i'll get through them for now
keep the idea's coming, it all helping!

the only other advice id give is DONT scrimp on fuel or spark, make it better than you think you need so you only spend once and future proof yourself.
also if youre like me and have no turbo experience whatsoever, make the first engine the one you learn on, make sure its all good, or all junk so when/if you f*** it up you wont cry too much.
plenty of time later to buld a decent strong engine to take advantage of the power adder.

we think exactly the same, the engine in the ute is good but i've spent nothing on so if i kill it then it's not the end of the world, as long as i learn something! in the future i might build something to suit turbo charging but for now it's about learning and having as bit of fun fuel wise i'll be running a straight gas system and filling with propane only (unless i'm away from home and can't get it) spark wise i'll be putting a HEI dizzy on and if the budget allows i'll even put in some brisk plugs

you dont have to worry about running propane, yes i still would when you could but its not like you have to be worried about it

yeah your right, i only run straight propane in my cars cause it's guaranteed to be good and it's the same price as LPG, where as LPG is whatever they mix it as that day, shell gas can be as bad as 50/50 propane, butane!

I bought a turbo 186 from the trading post some years back. It had a cast iron exhaust manifold and Al intake (similar to the vl style)There was one advertised on ebay about 3 weeks back. (still have mine somewhere, so will try and get some pics if you would like) This engine had Ford (I was told 200ci - could be wrong) pistons on starfire rods and a steel crank. TDC came to about an inch and a bit below the top of the bore so it had nothing in compression. It would take 25lb of boost all day, and was the scariest thing I have driven. It had standard head and cam, and sucked through SU's Am thinking of doing the same to a 253 one day- - minus the SU's :-) Hope this helps. Brian |

i'm just needing to do something exhaust manifold wise now, still trying to decide what to do there, i'm very tempted to cast my own, it's only the lack of time to do something that's stopping me!

hi brian, do you still have the 186,do you know what mods the motor had like was the crank a 186 or 179,was the motor running a copper head gasket/plate and were pistons dished-tops.any info you can tell me about the engine mods would be great. thanks tony

nice, my plans have altered slightly
i've started making a pattern to cast a turbo exhaust manifold, i now have a T04 turbo and i'll be running into a straight gas carby then into cain 2 barrel manifold, the only piece needed is the exhaust manifold, that'll be done soon(ish)
my focus ATM is getting my tonner finished and rego'ed then i'll play with force feeding that little 186 :-)
