Hi all, This is my first post.
I recently acquired an 81 WB ute. 202 blue, 3 on the tree. Its had some work done already, new clutch and brakes etc. It has 11 months rego and its going to be a daily driver, cant afford the loan on my 4x4 in a first year apprenticeship.

Not 100% sure what I'm going to do with it yet. looking for suggestions.

Definately want to clean out the rust and respray it.

I think I'd like to put a 253 in it. I dont want it to be too thirsty but it is on gas so I think I could afford it. But what else would I have to do to go along with that? Do I need a different gearbox/transmission etc?

Otherwise I will just hot up the 202 in it. Where do you start on something like that?

It runs pretty well at the moment but It feels a little fragile to me. Ideally I'd like to get it to a point where I can drive it hard on occasion and not worry about stuffing something.

thoughts??

all help appreciated.

thanks

cool man

the V8 conversion is simple, it really is as easy as changing the obvious stuff

motor
gearbox
radiator
exhaust

shouldnt have any probs then as long as i change those components you reckon.. how about the diff? My Dad is advising me against it cause he had an old Ford LTD that he changed the 351 for a 302 and had all sorts of problems... probly cause he didnt change over any other components i guess...

diff will hold up fine, unless you plan on doing burnouts or fast take off's that is

if you plan on giving it a bit of ruff treatment then go for the salisbury (V8) diff then, it'll take a fair bit of abuse, you'll need to change the drive shaft to suit too if you change the diff

and what do you reckon I'd change the gearbox too. I dont know what the V8 versions came out with. I'm guessing the 4sp floor. mines 3 on the tree. can you swap over to a 4 sp column shift? or is floor the only option. I like on the floor better.

The input shaft is different on the V8 gearbox. There was no option for 4 speed column shift. You can have a 3 speed column shift with a V8. Aussie 4 speed will be the easiest conversion but needs to be a floor shift.
The best way will to be buy the motor and gearbox as a complete conversion with everything you need and just plonk it all straight in. You will need a V8 radiator as the hose inlets are wrong on the 6 radiator.

It is easy, just bolt it all together. You can do it easy.

V8 3spd and 6cyl 3spd are the same gearbox, only the input shaft length is different (and the cover over it too). So just rebuild your 3spd as a V8 box. New input shafts are not dear new (these guys have them - http://www.kingswoodcountry.com.au/). The 3spd and 4spd boxes use the same bellhousing, clutch setup, tailshaft etc. As stated above, you are beetr off buying a whole V8 4spd setup if that is what you want though. Make sure it is from a WB or last half of HZ as you'll also need the clutch pedal for a full-cable clutch setup for a V8. If I were you i'd get a diff too, tailshaft, radiator etc. Might be better to buy a whole car like this:

Easy conversion
I did this on my WB van 3.3 column manual to 253 auto, If you go Auto its easy , the foot pedals just unbolt take of the clutch pedal and swap the brake pedal for one from an auto, take out the steering column and swap for a column auto unit(if you want to keep the bench seat)get the linkages to suit the column auto ,the mounting holes and nuts are already in the chassis to bolt them to.
Put the motor and box in as a complete unit(stick a yoke in the back of the gearbox and block the speedo cable hole in the box or fluid will piss out) bolt in and wire up. The accelerator cable will need to be changed V8 is longer and run a trans cooler, change the exhaust ,radiator, tailshaft and your off!
WB`s have a small salisbury diff and will handle a 253 fine I have had the same original diff in mine for about 7-8 years with a 253.

If you are worried about fuel consumption a 253 with standard 2bbl carby will do better on fuel than a 202 if driven normally , most commercials have 3.55 diff gears you may want to change this to a 3.08 or 2.78 if you do a lot of HWY driving to bring the revs down.

When i did mine, i went from 202 blue auto to 253 red 4 spd and had no change in fuel economy but much nicer to drive. I would stick with the 355 gears, i changed to 308 gears and found i used more fuel and found it noticebly slower through the hills where i live
