Hi there,

I've got a HG monaro that the brakes squeel excessively. It is extremely bad when idling along in heavy traffic. Just backing out of the driveway causes them to make a bad squeeling noise. The brakes work fine and they do not make any noise when they are operating.

I have had the calipers recoed and put in two different kinds of brake pads.

I have heard that there was a Holden modification of these brakes that included anti-rattle shims installed in the brake calipers. My calipers do not have them and I heard that they were normally thrown away when brakes were rebuilt over the years.

Does anyone know about these and do you think they would solve my problem?

gday i'm not sure how affective these shims are but try item number 170590230634 user name earlybitz 1 on ebay he has them for sale hope this helps

Hi Alan. All HK HT HG disc brake vehicles had the 'anti rattle shims' as standard fitment. They were'nt optional or a modification.

In the LX-UC Torana era, we used to glue the pads to the caliper nad the piston. Alright the HG is a dual piston, the Torana a single
piston but it helped. Can't remember if the Torana used an anti rattle shim.

A long time ago, but the glue was like a contact adhesive from memory.

One pair of hands working does more than a thousand pairs praying.

Back in my early working career in a Holden dealership, when HK's were new, there was a modification to stop noisy disc brakes by taking the carbon core out of an AA battery, drilling a hold in the centre of the pad material, then inserting the carbon rod into the pad. Another method was to cut a groove across the face of the pad. I don't know how legal these types of modifications would be these days though.

Phil, thats amazing. Imagine if a Holden Dealer did that today - or maybe they still do their own magic. I wonder what else they got up to in the old days? Banana peels in the diff?
