Was hoping if somone knew why the clutch plate reverses depending on wether a 3 or 4 speed gearbox is fitted to a red 6 cyl. Is it because of spacing on splines or a difference in bell housing sizes if any.
I recently had a bolt break in the housing on my 3 speed and changed the housing with one from a 4 speed, at same time I put a near new one tonner clutch in (only had 50kms of easy work on it)and worked fine. After about 70kms of hard driving on the current setup, it overheats and refuses to bite after hard rpm or a couple of minutes. really ca only be driven at idle. Wondering if I put another clutch in should I orientate it for a 3 speed or a four speed.
Dont really want to keep buying clutches to find out.
Cheers

I wasn't aware clutches were reversed. As far as I was aware 3 and 4spd aussie boxes are the same in all regards from the front of the box forward.
Is the clutch adjusted properly? What car is it in? HQ, WB, LJ? |

The clutch is in a hq the previous clutch worked fine, decided to change it since I had the gearbox out anyway.
According to the manual the short side of the clutch hub goes to flywheel for a 4 speed box and the long on the 3 speed. Unfortunatley doesnt state why.
After installing I found I had to do quite a bit of adjusting to get the clutch to work at all and i have tried running it as a high pedal and low pedal and inbetween. Either way I'm guessing i'm going to need to deglaze the flywheel.

This information (regarding the different fitting of the clutch plate) comes from the HK workshop manual & the 4-speed box they are referring to is the Opel box which a totally different clutch plate & spline.
If you have an Aussie 4-speed then the 3-speed clutch & bellhousing is all the same.
