Hey, just wondering if anyone knows the maximum legal engine i can put into a HR. I'm trying to figure out if ill get an engineers cert with a 350 chev. its a special so the factory weight is 1183Kg. if anyone knows the calculation or the max i could fit in it would be appreciated. cheers

hey bud, wouldnt it depend on what brakes etc you have? i got no idea really, just wanted to put my two bobs worth in somewhwere, ha ha what are ya thinking of doing ?

It is based upon the heaviest sedan in HR, which will be an auto Premier. Look here: http://www.rta.nsw.gov.a...ifications_nov_2007.pdf
Page 3. If the Premier weighs 1200kg then the biggest engine is 352.8ci so a 350 Chev or stroked 304/308. |

Do you need the weight of the heaviest version of the regular 4-door sedan.
That would be EH Premier 179 sedan (1185 kg) & HJ GTS 4-door (1442 kg).

I would be going to an engineer before I even started on that road. There is a nice little bit in that link that says- "Owners should note that an engine might not be suitable even though its capacity falls within the specified limits. Owners are therefore advised to check details of a proposed engine conversion with an engineering signatory before commencing the work." Edited by user Sunday, 5 June 2011 11:41:10 PM(UTC)

I agree. I think that clause is more for weight related issues though, like someone trying to put a 366ci Chev big block into a HR sedan or a Detroit diesel into an FJ. But still very much worth checking first.
I also wonder whether you'd get away with the HJ with the GTS at 1416kg or if you could use the Caprice at 1599kg? The Caprice is the heaviest sedan equivalent HJ. These are Tare weights from the HJ features manual. The equivalent Curb weights are 1459kg and 1646kg respectively. |

Thanks! More curiosity for my sake than anything else, I weighed the HJ (308/T400/9") with lightweight wheels, plastic fuel tank and no heater/radio and it came in at 1480kg. pretty much ruins the chance of a blown holden engine that is a grenade much past 650hp, but i could whack a 800hp NA bbc thats reasonably understressed and have a shot at engineering it. But isn't a Caprice a long wheelbase compared to a GTS, so therefore considered a different vehicle? |

Its not the heaviest sedan if you look, its the sedan with the biggest capacity engine minus any extras like AC and towbar. So it would be based on a bog stock sedan with a 308 or what ever the biggest donk was in that series. Maybe really the lightest sedan with the biggest capacity engine. That is correct. Exact wording is:
"Original weight" is the original (unmodified) "tare weight" of the sedan version of the vehicle model fitted with the largest engine available for the model but without optional accessories such as air conditioning and tow bar.
As it says "Vehicle Model" not "Vehicle Series" it would mean the sedan equivalent. So if you have a HJ Holden van it would be a HJ Belmont sedan with 308, not sure if that means with M21 or TH400. If it was a HJ Kingswood ute it would be a HJ Kingswood with 308. |

Thanks for all the help. yeah i'll definetly be speaking with an engineer before i start anything but just wanted a rough idea of what figures i could play with, cheers

I have two HRs , 1170kg and 1150kg , so you arent far off the mark with 1183kg, hope this helps. |
