Hi all. Got a sad tale to tell and need some help. Have had my 81837 in storage for the last 8 years and picked it up saturday to bring home and start restoring. All goes well until i lift the bonnet and find some f%$*&% **** has swapped the id tags. Not happy Jan. I have seen from time to time on here conversations regarding guys selling plates on ebay. Mine was an 81837 warwick yellow with black interior and i have owned it since january 1998. Just wondering if anyone has any recollection of any ebay users who may have been involved in selling plates. I didn't realise until sunday arvo so had to wait until today to go see the cops and return to the place it was being stored at. Long story short, the plates have been taken off my other 80737 monaro which is also stored there and sat onto my 81837. police are now a bit more interested seeing as its now more than a case of straight forward theft. If anyone can remember any ebay user names that were trying to sell tags that would be much appreciated. Cheers.

Yep i do realise that. The main difference is that the tags just werent knicked and left at that. Someone with inside knowledge has gone to the effort of trying to cover their tracks by going out the back yard past the big guard dog taken the tags off the 80737 and then gone back inside and silasticed the tags back onto the other car. what sort of opportunistic thief would risk getting caught whilst going to those lengths. Obviously someone there has done this and if an ebay user name can be linked back to them then maybe something can happen. I dont expect to see the tags again but i would sure like to see someone being held accountable.

I doubt ebay is your place to look. Most of the ones showing up on ebay would have come off completely rusted wrecks or been pulled off cars years ago. There would be too much of a paper trail putting a set of obviously stolen plates on ebay and it's likely that owners of these vehicles have all details recorded. Yours have more likely been put on a car to be sold off as a genuine 81837.

Better off trying to figure out who knew both cars were there and what they were. Do you have a timeframe of when they went missing, or is it just sometime in the last 8 years?

proving is hard. i guess i still have the cars and they are genuine with ownership known going back to the eighties. None of the people that are involved or hang around the place have a monaro. I still think that if they were dumb enough to think i wouldnt notice the difference in the tags then i do think they would be dumb enough to try and sell them.

lots wont like this, but if you have all the numbers, contact data tags in the us & get a new set made, might be your only choice if you want the tags on the car..
I've been in a simular situation, except I got my tags back, but they had torn them off the car insted off poping the rivets, so I will most likely have to get the tags re done otherwise a perfectly good monaro is a write off because two little pricks damaged a few bits of alloy.

Why cant they be remade as a spare part? It wouldnt be like he is tring to pass it off as a fake.
Assuming his story is true and im not doubting you by the way.

Dosent the plate match up with the number stamped on the firewall to prove they match?

Have you contacted Holden and told them your delima?

Firewall number has no correlation to tags.

Holden would have very little idea or concept of what is being discussed. I doubt the person you spoke to would even recognise a HK!

So there is no way of finding out what the car is just by looking at the firewall number?

That is correct rallystripes, the firewall number has absolutely nothing to do with luxury level and body style.

Hi Warren, wouldnt the firewall number at least be recorded in the log books along with the vin and body number?

Log books?

If you've got them, 43 years is a long time.

VIN & Body number?

The firewall number is the VIN & body number.

To register a HK all you need is the firewall & engine numbers.

Ive got log books for mine and in the 80s they shouldnt of been too rare to find.

Ok,one says the firewall number has nothing to do with whats on the tags, which includes the long skinny tag eg 81837KH512345 and the body tag 81837 and your saying the firewall number is the vin and body?

If that is the case, then the vin will correspond to the firewall which is his proof its a genuine 327 and not a clone, going by the the numbers.
Once this has been formalised i cannot see any problem with him getting tags reproduced as suggested before.

By the way,im not trying to start any heated debates on here but im trying to help this guy in what i would consider to be a serious delima.I remember with my GTS 350,all i went off was the 2 tin tags and engine number.,didnt even bother looking at the firewall number.

Firewall number is the chassis number. Skinny tag is the VIN number. BODY tag (one with trim, paint etc) has the body number on it. None align with HK unless it is an accident.

I don't pretend to be an expert here and I dips me lid to Byron, Warren, Ben & Dr T (in no particular order).

My understanding for HK's is...

They do not have a VIN number.

The Body plate mentions the vehicle serial/sequence number, ie 81837KH512345 with 12345 being the sequence number as designated by the plant (Pagewood in this case) that assembled the vehicle.

The Firewall stamp is the body number, bodies got shipped to other plants, but the firewall stamp is unique whereas all plants issued their own sequence numbers, which I assume is a line number for a particular model.

I have read many times that every plant had a number one Monaro/Brougham/Belmont ute etc.
