I am looking at buying a HG sedan (for parts) and it apparently has a running 186 and powerglide. Is the powerglide for a V8 and 6 cyldiner the same? If not can you modify the 6 cylinder one for a V8. What, assuming in OK running condition, would this (engine/gearbox) be worth? Also is the "step down" part of the gearbox crossmember the same for both V8 abd 6 cylinder? Cheers.

Wont fit Alex, the cases are very different, V8 cast in one piece,(Chev)



and the 6 has a bolt on.



308 has a bolt on too couldnt tell you if the housing interchanges,




but there are a couple for sale on various sites for $200-300... seems pricey to me

Defering to those with more experience

But as far as I know, the crossmember is the same

(at least I hope so as I am fitting a glide on the van that was a 6)

Couldnt tell you what they are worth together, it depends on how desperately you want one I suppose.

Brian thanks for that. Hope the project is progressing well. I don't want the engine and gearbox so will be passing them on.

253/308 and 6cyl are the same box but the V8 one uses a different pump and you can't just change the bellhousing over. Plus the V8 box uses the Chev box's extension houisng hence the crossmembers are different.
Brian, that looks like a HT-HG trimatic.

Pretty slack research

So the crosmembers are different...

No, but 6cyl Powerglide is the same as trimatic and 3spd synchro. V8 (Holden and Chev) powerglide is the same as Saginaw. See how far forward the mount is on that Chev powerglide at the top?

Ok now I'm getting confused.. (its ok, it happens often)

The substituted photo (3rd photo) is from My HT brougham and is a 2 speed (unless one gear is stuffed). This has the same mount as the chev powerglide/sag with the forward mount? Am I reading that right?

I swapped the crossmember for the trimatic in the HG with another from a HT brougham with 308 glide (when I was cleaning the bits up, it had less surface rust)and it fitted straight in.

I know the HK has a different arrangement for the crossmember, it used the chev box and mounts differently.

Ok..... confused no more.... puzzled as to why some people do the things they do...

This 308 & "powerglide" from the HT donor brougham ("original driveline"the add said) had a B&M powerglide shifter and would only select 2 gears on the transmission. Drove it from Coffs harbour like that.

No wonder the crossmember fitted the trimatic on the HG.

I'll get under My other 308 and Glide and have another look (i know its a glide..trimatics dont do 65mph in first)

Glad this thread came up, i would have been scratching my head for ages trying to find out what was wrong with my donor box.

definitely a ttimatic

if its cable kickdown its original floor shift only one

if electric kickdown its commondore

Dave, how would I tell if it has electric or cable kickdown?
I cant remember disconnecting anything from the box when taking it out.

How would I tell that it is definitely a powerglide and not a trimatic? Got the car and while I am no expert, I am thinking it is in fact a trimatic. It is a column auto with L/S/D/N/R on the instruement indicator. Cheers.

For a start the only HG with a Powerglide originally was a GTS350 auto. Rest were trimatics.

With 6cyl column shift HG trimatic shifts on the driver's side and Powerglide on the passenger side (with crossover under the front of the box).

Alex, I changed the 6cyl picture to show the round bulge on the side that wont be on the trimatic (sorry dont know the name for the sticky out thingy!!)

electric kickdown will have a lil terminal stickn up just back from dipstick tube entry.
if its cable there'l be a hole in body in that area

No, it is LH shift so it'll be VB-VL or WB. The code on the plate near the selector will give it up.
