what can cause a coil to cook? one of the coils to the VR suddenly overheated and before I could turn the ignition off it had cooked.
replaced it with a secondhand one and it overheats as well, but I managed to save it.

Replace the DFI module under the coil. These can cause the coil to draw too much current.

I had the same issue - burnt 2 coils. The reason was that both of them had resistances in the order of 0.5 Ohms which means that one needs to run a ballast resistor in line to make sure the overall resistance is about 1.2 to 1.5 Ohms.
