I may have a chance to buy a series 3 v8 ute off a guy at work ,he thinks he wont get anything for trade in,so i said i may do a deal with him (depends on the price).I would look at getting the motor and gearbox(auto) and sell the rest on ebay.It has done 195k and would need a rebuild,(he thinks bearings and welch plugs may do it).Looking to fit into a HQ.Is this easy, would it be worth it?Are the series 3 motors are the same as the vt?what else would i need to keep off the car.If its to much trouble i wont do the deal.

Most use the VN/VP as there is less security systems on them.
I am pretty sure that the body cotrol module talks to the engine management system for it to run, The body control module needs the key with head unit.
It can be done, but you may need a bit of electrical knowledge.
I am sure Mick or terry will confirm if the above is true with the security.
Alternatively you can buy a VN harness and place that on the engine. There are a few placs that sell made up harnesses for this type of conversion, not just into Holdens but Nissan Patrol is a common one.

You can use it - and simply get the anti-theft turned off in the memcal by one of the many 'chip tuners' out there.
Try to keep the engine, harness & computer complete as a matching unit, and do as little mods to it as possible, as the loom & computer is also needed to run the electronic auto.
The VS3/VT engine (assuming it's the MAF type - 179kw one) is the best incarnation of the EFI 5L. |

As Mick says it may or may not be the same as VT. Early VSIII were basically the same as VSII, later VSIII are the same as VT. |

The last Holden V8 was made on 28th June 1999. The last few batches were stockpiled for late VSIII utility production which ran on into 2000. So June 2000 is very late Holden V8. The VT 5.0 features a roller camshaft, sequential fuel injection & an air flow meter (instead of a MAP). As commodorenut has said the VT 5.0 V8s were best of the breed. The changeover from the VS to the VT type V8 in VSIII was around Oct/Nov 1998 in both the Statesman/Caprice & the ute range. Dr Terry |
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0 |
