Oil pump on a 308 is at the front, bottom of the engine. Can be removed without removal of the sump. toddyg is checking the oil pick up which does require the removal of the sump, hence his question.

Had this happen to me a few years back. $1.63 gasket, and a whole lot of headache. You will need to get access to the pickup bolts on the bottom of the block inside the sump, so you will have to have enough clearance from the crossmembers and steering (depending on what model) as well as removing the trans inspection/clutch cover. There will be next to no clearance around anything if you just drop the sump, so you will have to lift the engine up to get clearance. Then there is the re-fitting of the gaskets for the sump, best to have lots of space to work to get it right or risk a messy everywhere-you-park, as well as defects Sorry Edited by user Monday, 26 September 2011 4:18:39 AM(UTC)

I pulled the sump off my HZ once with it still in the car. Now I just save time and whip the engine out. It was a PITA and trying to get the gaskets right is hard enough when you can actually see what you're doing, let alone lying on your back getting little grains of dirt in your eyes.
