Hi, the engine in my VS has done nearly 100,000 ks and for the past 8 months the engine has been slowly consuming engine oil. Between my last 10K service i had added 2.8L of oil. I cant find any leaks, no oil in the coolant, not blowing any smoke.
Has anyone got any idea of what I could do, apart from get rid of it!!
Thanks |

yeah I know it has to go somewhere, but I haven't found any signs as yet. The engine block is fairly clean, no leaks around the sump or sump plug. Its got me buggered!!! |

What grade of oil are you using ?
Modern trends favour very light oils, with most manufacturers specifying oils like 10W/40, 5W/30 etc. These oils suit the tight tolerances of a new engine & because the oil is like water it has minimum 'drag' which helps fuel economy.
Problem is, when the engine wears slightly the looser bore tolerances cause the thinner oil to more easily get past the oil rings meaning it will start consuming oil. Not huge quantities or blowing smoke, but enough to be annoying.
I think that changing to an SM rated 20W/50 will virtually stop this. OK, your fuel consumption might change, but the difference in summer months would be miniscule.
BTW, at 100,000 km a VS V6 is a long way from being 'worn out', it's only just run in.

Could be sucking it past the valve guides on deceleration also. Not easy to notice while you are driving the car.

i remember getting in a VX taxi when it was around 2 years old, i looked at the odometer and i said 810,000k's i said to the taxi driver about the hi k's and he said other the servicing it hasn't has any major work done!! i've seen many VS-VY's since with 600,000+ K's on them still running nicely, the ecotec engines are a good engine

This probably has nothing to do with your current issue, but when the VS was new, I recall reading reports that there were issues with excessive oil consumption. The engine was designed to run very lean to improve fuel consumption and excessive oil consumption was a problem.
GM-H made running changes to address this. Dr Terry will know more about this no doubt. Either way I bet the 20W50 change will sort out the problem.

Yes, early ECOTEC V6s in VS had oil consumption issues, but most of these were fixed in warranty. gbaircon said that he only started to notice excess consumption in the last 8 months.
