With a clunk and a grinding noise my lady friends VS drivers side elctric window stopped working. I popped off the trim thinking it wouldn't be too hard to put it back into alignment only to discover that two of the six rivets that hold the winder assembly had sheared off. I can't be the first person to experience this, but I can't see how to fix it without picking the door apart, and I don't even know if that can be done.
Does anyone have any ideas?

There's 4 rivets holding the mechanism into the door - you can replace them with nuts & bolts, or do what I do - manually pull the centre out of the rivet with sidecutters, bach out the rivet "tube" and then tap the hole with an M6 thread - using dome-head M6 bolts (washers under them) and loctite on the threads to secure it. Did this years ago to a daily VS, and 10 years on it's still good.
To get the mechanism out, you need to undo the 2x 10mm hex-head bolts behind the armrest section of the door, to allow the window arm to lift up - letting the glass nose-dive into the door, sliding forward, and dropping the tracks off the guides. You can then drill out the door rivets & drop the mech out through the large hole at the bottom of the door. Re-install is the reverse, but the glass is a bit harder to slot back onto the little guides that run in the tracks - patience is a must. |

That is some very excellent information. I'll give it a crack in the new year. Along with everything else I'll never get done.
Very much appreciated,
Anthony.

That was a great help, ended up using nuts and bolts. Not that happy with the result, as the arms and the mech were still a bit bent even after I straightened out the worst of it, but at least the window works now.
I told her I accepted cash, paypal or sexual favours. I think she's still deciding.
Cheers,
Anthony.

That's a bit harsh. Paypal costs you money. Then again, the last type of payment can cost you a lot too. |
