i bought a 253 last week and iv'e just noticed it has a odd engine number, the number is NR1####
this is a nasco replacement engine right? the engine date code says it's a 1978 block, wasn't nasco gone by then?
also, does anyone know how nasco engine numbers were handed out? did they start at NR00001 or did they start at another point?
no real reason for wanting to know, i'm just interested that's all

Early commodores shared the N prefix for a spare-parts block. VC/VH Blue motors (the XT5 upgrade) were N5*xxxxx |

Nasco became GMP&A and the same sequence continued. Number sequence was the same as all other sequences, started at 1001. They were sequential (just like the HQ sequence), and used for all Holden replacement engines (not Chevs) for HQ-HZ, late LC, LJ, late HG, VT and as far as I can tell LH-UC and CF. Replacement engines for HK-HG and earlier LC appear to have been their own sequence(s) and continued to a point. After that you'd just buy say a 202 to replace a 186 and use your old sump and pickup etc.
From what I understand NR is a replacement for any HQ-HZ, LH-LX or VB 253HC engine. I don't know how and when Nasco/GMP&A stamped the engine, and how they knew what it was for as they should be a complete engine with a sump. I'm still trying to figure that bit out. |

Maybe the number NR start 00001 and go up to like 20000 for pre ADR27A then from 20000 like it's a ADR27A ? Their has to be something in the numbers like to show HQ,Torana, commodore. Torana starting at 30001. Commodore 40001. LX ADR could start 35001 even thou pre ADR would not get to 32000 now would they ? same with the HX on. me thinks. We only had 12 month warranty. the date code on the block is 31A8 the engine number is NR11007
the previous owner said the engine was taken out of a WB ute, but it could have been in another car before that anyway??
thanks for the info, the engine is going to be put in a ride on mower, should be alot of fun, hahahaha

If you were closer I'd buy it. I'm trying to squirrel away as many Nasco engines as possible as for example an NR is the next best thing for ANY of the above 253/4.2 powered vehicles if the original is gone. A 31A8 NR block is better for a 1971 HQ GTS coupe than any close dated coded QR engine will ever be.
Castellan, they started at Nx1001 and counted up. No different sequence for Torana etc. GMH didn't bother to distinguish bewteen HQ 308, HJ 308, HX 308 etc (all QT) so why would Nasco/GMP&A? |

Is the N, stamped the same size and is it harder to see like some of the Q stampings?

My HQ GTS4 had a warranty engine fitted back in early 75, it's a NQ prefix, if you want the details I can get them..

I have one two that matches around your numbers and cast date but the N is poorly stamped. The reason I ask about yours is I believe mine is genuine stamping just poorly struck N like some of the Q's that look like a faint O. Just was curious if this was common on N stampings.

NQ? Are you sure? There was no Q designation on production engines. |

The sump must just be going by the dealers say so and then she gets delivered as ?

Sorry for the confusion. My number is not NQ. I was meaning the engine stampings I have seen like QR, QL , etc. A lot of those Qs look like a faint O.

Byron are you saying that the above 31A8 casting date ie an 1978 casting is a good replacement for any 253 engined vehicle circa HQ-HX even though its cast as a 78? I picked up an engine 4 years ago from a wrecker when i did my TH700 conversion in my HJ GTS coupe (it had a tri 308 when i bought the car in bits 10 years ago)and this engine has cast date 13J7 and eng # NT10*** So should cover any model HQ-HX (cant remember if HZ was QT as well or was it stamped Z? only) It never bothered me that my HJ coupe didn't have it's original engine,so having this NT block is a plus for my coupe? cheers...Mario

Definitely. If you blew an engine in your 4-5 year old HJ you'd go to a GMP&A dealer and buy a new engine. Date codes mean nothing with Nasco engines. It is even possible that you could have picked up an old stock N prefix engine in 1978 for your near new 1976 HJ that was cast in 1974. |

Block and piston kits, short motors and long engines. From what i've been told block & piston kits and long engines were the most common. From what i've found out so far it appears that long engines got Nasco numbers, block and piston kits were blank. Short motors are a grey area at present, gut feeling is they were blank too. |
