HT holden with 308 fitted and lowered 2 inches. The drag link slightly drags on the sump and the idler arm (attached to the chassis) creaks when turning lock to lock. Have I assembled the steering incorrectly?

There is something very wrong there. The suspension ride height will have no effect of the draglink to sump clearance.
Your problem maybe:
1. Wrong sump. 2. Wrong engine mounts or gearbox mounted too low. 3. Wrong draglink. 4. Draglink bent or wrongly fitted.

HT type sump fitted, is there only one type of sump? HT 308 engine mounts brand new. Brand new ebay drag link. Can these be fitted back to front or upside down. Everthing that you can get brand new I replaced. The steering almost touches the starter motor as well.

Thanks for all the input, much appreciated.Had the car wheel aligned today.Mechanic seems to think the idler arm is too short as the drag link is not level. He suggested it may be from an earlier model holden. The question is. Is there more than one type of idlier arm for HT holden and is it possible to buy the correct type?

Just checked under the car again the idler arm touches the chassis rail so when turning the idler arm rubs the chassis.Have spaced the idler arm to get clearance but steering still creaks. Is the drag link supposted to be level? Mine runs at an angle.

The draglink is supposed to level, you have a major problem with either the idler or pitman arm.
Have you been able to locate the source of the creaking noise? Every pivot in the steering linkage is a greased joint so one of them is probably dry.
Compare your car with another HK/T/G, the reason for the un-level draglink should be obvious then.

you may have the idler arm support on the wrong way the one that bolts to the y frame |
why drink & drive when you can drift & slide |

I have the idler arm fitted so the extended bosses are the part that attaches to the chassis if I swap it around the idler arm fouls the chassis. The creaking noise comes from the pivot point where the idler arm support is connected to the idler arm, it appears to be under heaps of pressure from lifting the drag link out of level. Yet when I unbolted the idler support bracket from the chassis the bolts where under very little pressure.I will bit the bullet and pull the idler arm and draglink apart and check there operation off the car. Thanks for all the help.

Its amazing what you find once you pull apart the steering.Removed idler arm support from chassis and found the steering moved fine and looked ok. Checked idler arm support and noticed it was wound in tight so when you turned right the thread undid a bit but when you turned left you tighten the thread until it creaked and went tight. After the light bulb came on over my head and I slapped myself on the back of the head for such a rookie mistake I consulted a couple of workshop mannuals and have set the idler arm to 65mm and reassembled and hey presto almost level draglink and the steering light as a feather, well as light as a HT Holden gets.I take it the steering turns on the thread of the idler arm support? So the drag link will go up or down slightly when turning the wheel. Is this correct?
