Hi there. I am putting a 202 in my hr to replace the 179hp. I have 2 rebuilt engine choices to go with. Both only standard & was wondering is the engine number any thing to go by? (It has an aussie 4 speed & 3.36 banjo) 1st is a HL779** 2nd is a QL840***
My searches found the the HL is LH/LX ADR27 - LX/UC ADR27A High compression manual QL is HQ-HZ & LX High compression Is one a better option & what does the ADR27 & ADR27A mean?? Any help appreciated Anthony

You have the HL correct.
QL is HQ-mid HZ. QL was also used in LX and UC post 6/76 (with ADR27A) auto Toranas but had an X stamped in front of the QL.
ADR27 is evaporative emission contriols and ADR27A is evaporative and exhaust emissions controls. Basically what the unwashed call "pollution equipment". ADR27 is not all that much, just a PCV valve and a few other bits. ADR27A means control over when vaccuum advance can occur, sealed idle screws and one some engines EGR.
QL840xxx is around 3/77 so HX which will be ADR27A. HL779xx should be a late LH engine, possibly early LX (I can't remember the breakpoint) but it will be only ADR27.
I'd just use the QL engine and sell the HL engine to a Torana nut that thinks it is worth more because it comes from a Torana. |

ADR27 & ADR27A are rules governing anti-pollution gear fitted to cars in Australia (ADR27 > mid 73 on & ADR27A > mid-1976 on)
Both the engine numbers listed fall into the 1976-77 ADR27A period.
The HL engine was originally fitted to an LX Torana 3300 hi-comp - manual trans.
The QL engine was originally fitted to an HX 3300 hi-comp - man or auto.
Apart from minor cam & carby mods & slight differences in pollution plumbing, the engines will be very similar.
