So I clearly haven't bought a workshop manual so will keep hassling everyone here in the meantime. Photo below was taken underneath the car, looking towards the rear, you can see the sump plug on the right hand side. What I'm looking at is where the trans bolts up to the block, I can see what appears to be an open gear. It looks like the housing hasn't got a cover on it. Is this normal? I'm thinking it's not as it's completely open to the weather and dust and dirt etc. There is also the thread on the housing (center of photo), with nothing bolted into it. Am I missing something mechanical here or just missing mechanical knowledge?? As always, thanks in advance

Looks like a Commodore or some WB or Subird or whatever had them full bellhousing trimatic. There is a flat plate that goes there. |

yeah as Byron said, it's just missing the flat plate, that bolt hole is used to bolt the plate on

My guess is it's an an EH. The trans looks like a Hydra-Matic & the exhaust pipe is in the correct position also.
Yes, the ring gear should have a pressed metal cover over it.

Sorry, yeah should have mentioned before it's in an EH. As far as i know, it's the original hydra-matic with a reco'd 186 in front of it.
Is this plate/cover that i'm missing an easy enough bolt-up job? Can I just get under the car with a replacement plate and put it on or do i need to pull the motor or trans out?
I bought the EH about 2 months ago and only now am getting around to poking about with it. Any clues on why the plate would be missing in the first place? Could it have rattled off while driving or would it have been left off when the reco'd motor was put in?

No doubt someone was lazy or they lost it during the engine reco. Easy to bolt on without taking motor or box out, and if you cant find one you can always just make one out of flat sheet steel or aluminium

if you don't replace it you will eventually have oil leaking problems as it creates a vacuum that sucks the oil out through the rear main. .also the oil gets on the clutch plates on manual boxes. i know this is an auto.

Pretty certain the engine is a reco. I've got paperwork from the engine reco place that did it (they've since gone out of business, have already attempted to contact them). It may have only been a new head and top end which would explain the condition of the sump.
I'm worried that not having this plate will allow dirt and water and crap into the box, is it possible for this to happen?
Engine was reco'd in 2001, if the plate hasn't been on since then what sort of gearbox damage am i potentially looking at?
