G'day, I recently lost my oil filler cap, wouldn't be the first person to do that I imagine. Anyway, when I was chasing up a new one to fit my 186 red engine, as not all the brands of oil filler caps actually fit properly, I had a guy ask me if I was after the air breather oil filler cap. Anyone know what an air breather oil filler cap is and whether I should have one for my 186 red engine?
In case anyone is wondering, Tridon is the only brand that I could find that makes oil filler caps that actually fit properly. |

An air breather oil cap is the older style which vents the rocker direct to the atmosphere. They were used up until ADR27 (late 1973). All 149,161,179 & 186 had the breather caps, as did early 173, 202 & Holden V8.
The ADR27 style is a (flat) sealed cap because the rocker cover is vented to the air cleaner. You can't used the sealed cap on the earlier motors. You can use a breather cap on the later motors but if the motor is a little fumey, it creates a mess.

I always thought it was as simple as 2 hole rocker cover=breather cap needed. 3 hole=not.
And yet years ago i made the mistake of trusting what the local parts shop said..... |
