HQ 202, which gearbox & diff should I change to?

Hi guys. I have a HQ Prem with a factory four speed manual and 3.36:1 LSD. I want to swap to an auto gearbox and a different diff, but I don't know what to go with. I want it to be quick off the line (traffic lights) but also good for everyday driving. Any suggestions would be great, cheers. Edited by user Thursday, 19 April 2012 5:58:22 AM(UTC)

Leave the 3.36:1 centre, will be fine, or change to 3.08. |

Ive had the 3:55, 3:36 and currently the 3:08.
3:36 is better then the 3:55 and the 3:36 is pretty close to the 3:08 although I find on the highway that it revs lower.
I personally like the 3:08.

It depends where you are driving for most of the time, city or freeway.
If you drive mostly in the city & as you say you want it "quick off the line", then you will need the 3.36. If you do a lot of freeway or country driving than the 3.08 is the one, but you will lose that low down torque.

G'day Tom, I hope you don't think I'm high jacking your post. I have a 3.36 ratio in my diff and I'm interested to know and I believe you may be as well, whether it's worth changing over to the fine spline and if so what are the benefits? |

fine spline is definitely better in bango set up. no probs in hq-z & lh-x set up. but unfortunately no axles to suit hktg or lc lj. although you can rebracket a n LH-X housing to suit HKTG. either way its th weakest link & askn for problems if you gunna have higher horsepower

It would be cheaper to just find a sedan/coupe/wagon/statesman Salisbury complete diff and tailshaft for a HQ. HK-HG a bit harder than that |

I have a HT wagon and I had to replace an axle in my Banjo diff over a year ago and thought of putting a Salisbury 10 bolt diff on instead. But I found the Salisbury diffs were hard to come by and the ones I did see were $2000 or more, where the Banjo axles were plentiful at around $100 each. I am assuming the the HT salisbury is harder to come by. I have bought 3 salsbury diffs (3:36, 3:08 and a LSD 3:08) for my HQ. All were under $100, but I did get a bargain for the LSD though. The other 3:08 was delivered for $60 and is in my shed as a spare. I sold the 3:36 for $90 on ebay.

Unfortunately I am finding that the prices for the HK, HT & HG Monaro's are pushing up the prices for parts and the Salisbury 10 bolt diffs are a hot item. |

3.36 Ratio and a trimatic should be ok to get ya off the line with a 202 but a 3.08 would slow it down to much of the line. The trimatic auto should have a heavy duty oil cooler and you could go for a bit higher stall maybe use a 173 converter. The trimatic auto can be strengthened using the v8 plates.

I didn't, isn't that from a Jag though? I'll try anything as long as it's reliable and I can keep the existing shifter. |

As far as I'm aware the T700 transmissions are from the VR, VS, VN & VP Commodores. |

Do these bolt straight on and if so, do they also bolt on to a 253?

You can buy adaptor units for your engine. The following is a link to a company in Victoria that specialise in automatic transmissions, they have all you need to adapt the T700 to your engine.
