Hi, I have a 308 early Holden Red motor manifold. I have fitted a blue/black motor Rochestor (front fuel inlet) I spoke to a carby guy today. He advised me it will leak air as the mating surfaces don`t match. It looks ok, but what is the best way to tell this is happenning. Is it easy to see? Thanks, Peter

That doesn't sound right to me. I have 3 Quadrajets of various vintages on (Chev) manifolds ranging from stock to Edelbrock to GMPP. The bases are all the same, spread bore pattern. Quadrajets can leak if the base has warped because someone has tightened the carb down too tight. Could that be what the guy was getting at?

I cant remember if the bases changed or the gasket changed on the VC commodore roch type carb right where the auto choke heat riser groove was on the pre-pollution manifold.
I had a very small vac leak at that right hand rear corner

If it is sucking air the motor will run poorly. You can also check for leaks by spraying aero start or brake cleaner at the base of the carbie (or suspected leak) with the motor running if there is a leak the motor will stall and/or splutter.

i think the blues ran a thick gasket.
i have put rochestors on before that the throttle shaft contacts the manifold and won't allow to seal. this is fixed with a thick (5 mm?) gasket. |
Old holdens brought on the spot, quick decision, cash paid. |
