Its done 80,000 miles with and had no work done on it apart from blue motor dissy and coil, blows some smoke on startup but does not use much oil. 308/quadrajet/cast headers.

It will need and engine (and body) job at some stage but I'm thinking of giving it a cheap tickle now. i reckon I can handle a cam/lifter transplant.

Any recommendations for the cam, (2.78 gears & powerglide), economy and a bit more mumbo would be good?

Do I need to replace the cam drive chain & sprockets?

Do I need to replace the oil pump? Hi-volume or standard? Are "JP" any good?

Any other advice?

thanks and regards

Greetings, Is it an HT or HG? 80000 is low miles in any car let alone a Brougham. The easiest way to improve the pick up is to change to a lower diff ratio like a 3.36 and saves having to open the engine. This will make a huge improvement in how the car goes and won't make it too high revving at legal highway speeds.
look out, the guru is coming through...

obviously its HT with powerglide.

best to go 3.08 ratio. thats what i have done with all 5 307 or 308 powerglide cars ive had. it was optioned on HT & HG & will give better pickup & economy. BTW 278 diff is only economical @120klm upwards. as soon as ya hit a hill it ul guzzle if under 120klm.

I agree, 3.08 is a good all round ratio for a V8 auto, especially if the car has 'modern' 70 or 60 series radial tyres. These are not as tall as the original crossply tyres & effectively lower the final drive ratio even further.

3.36 is livelier at traffic speeds, but is too low for freeway cruising speeds.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

With the Brougham being LSD can the ratio be changed keeping the existing centre?

Thanks all. It is a HT.

I dont believe it has an LSD, there is no sticker advising such, and turning one rear wheel with the back off the ground results in the other wheel turning the other way.
