Just looking through this ad, could you have a V8 HK with drums all round?

Sensational car.

When you consider air conditioning was only available on V8 when the HK was released and you could not get air with disc brakes until just before the Monaro was released it stands to reason that this was normal. (I know a fellow that still has his HK Prem sedan V8 with air con, drum brakes. He purchased it new and it now sits beside his house as a gate, happily rusting away)

I believe you could. I know Melbourne built HK HT 307's (non GTS) had power assisted drums as standard with disc optional. Adelaide built could not be ordered with drums, disc only. I'm not sure what the case was for other plants. It doesn't indicate in the item descrition what plant it was built at.

Interesting to note a few things from the photos. He claims it is genuine low miles but I reckon it has been restored at some stage in its life. Plain brake pedal rubber. It should read 'POWER BRAKES'. Where is the under bonnet insulation? Engine bay on Premier would of been Warrigal Black. Rocker covers - obviously. 5 Litre emblems on the front guards are in the wrong place. Obviously the 5 litre badge on the tailgate is wrong and hideous. The Nasco 'deck lid' emblem was not available on wagon/ute/van. The left mirror which he claims is dealer fitted is in the wrong spot where it is rendered useless. Doubt the dealer fitted it there. Nice car though.

I've just made the same mistake with my HK Ute project. Put the mirror on the leading edge of the door, as per per the right side, and couldn't see the (round) mirror from the driver's seat. Put HQ style mirror heads on it just like this guy has done.

Very nice looking HK though, and highly optioned. It surprises me what a clean HKTG Premier cost these days. Correct about being original with drum brakes with V8.

It is interesting how different plants had different policies on this. Was it more likely a law which differed state by state along the lines of the left-hand mirror ruling for commercial vehicles. Or were the various plants 'inventing' their own policies on this.

What I mean by that, is that to my knowledge in NSW, non-boosted 4-wheel drums were standard for all HK & HT 6 & V8 Belmont, Kingswood, (base) Monaro & Premier. Power drums & power discs were both optional. All HG V8 got discs. HKTG P/R has said the Melbourne cars got power boosted drum standard with HK/T V8.

None of the HK or HT sales brochures mention this. Does anybody here know of any factory documentation on this.

Dr Terry, I might just add that I don't have documented proof on the Melboune built cars and base it on a Melbourne built HT 307 Kingswood with Power drums that I nearly purchased in Victoria. It was James VB that told me. I have never seen an Adelaide built HK HT HG V8 with any form of drum brakes.

I'm not denying the existence of power drum brakes on HK/HT V8s, I've seen plenty of them, although power disc brakes are more commonplace. What I'm asking is, does anybody have any literature to say that power drums were standard on Melbourne V8s, or that Adelaide V8s had discs standard. Any number of different sales brochures do not mention it.

I think you will find this is a state requirement. I beleive this because when the HG came out you had to have discs if you ordered the V8, but one magazine commented that this was already a requirement for NSW registered vehicles in HT.

We also know that some driveline combinations in VK were also not available in NSW. Mick was telling me of people buying these combinations in victoria etc in the last few years and when they rock up to NSW motor registry they still will not register in NSW.

So I shall go with state laws.

Greetings, What a lovely car. It has the power pack fitted. Drums all round were the standard brakes on all cars except Brougham and GTS.

Greetings, A few things you say here are not quite right. Melbourne V8 cars did not have power brakes as standard and I have Broadcast sheets to prove this as well as pages in the Features book. Same goes for Adelaide and all other plants. Drums all round were standard on all cars except Brougham and GTS. This Premier is an early Sydney car going by the engine bay shot and the Savell Brothers paperwork is another give away to the build plant. The flash kit brochure is a Sydney based mob. Interesting to see a car with the popular power pack fitted.

The brake pedal rubber may have been replaced due to wear on the right side as you find on many automatic cars. The hood insulation has probably fallen off as they were only glued on with a central retainer plug. Only Brougham and GTS got the Warrigal black engine bays and this is a Premier so it got the regular black paint. The Engine Size Designation on the rear is a correct accessory and is listed in Group 80.E of GMH documentation. This car has it in the wrong place though as it should be on the top right side.

I agree it is a lovely car and should be a great driver.

Greetings, I would say you are 100% correct. It was 1/70 when New South Wales made a ruling change that a V8 had to have disc brakes as standard fitment in order to be registered. It is a bit like the front centre seat belt in a bench seat car at the time. For HG all V8 cars had disc brakes as standard.

Hi,

Have read through the above and noted that I can convert my drum braked 1968 HK Ute to 253 in Victoria without needing to change to disc brakes at the front. I just need to match what a basic level 307 chev had in the same car. I will add the booster to my drum brake system, probably don't really even need to do that.

Does anyone have any brochures, etc, with the mention of drum brakes in the HK with the V8?

Was hoping to get some form of Holden documentation with the mention of drum brakes all round and V8 to attach to my engine change form I will have to lodge with VICROADS when the conversion is complete.

Thanks,

Rob.
